Laser Therapy in Malaysian Physiotherapy Clinics: A Practical Guide

More physiotherapy, rehabilitation and sports medicine clinics in Malaysia are adding photobiomodulation to the treatments they offer. A Class 4 laser can fit well into an existing practice, but it works best when the clinic plans for it properly.

This guide walks through the practical steps, from checking registration to building laser therapy into a treatment plan.

1. Check the device is registered with MDA

Medical devices placed on the Malaysian market must be registered with the Medical Device Authority (MDA). Before buying, ask for the registration number and confirm it covers the exact model you are considering. VOLTA F3 is registered under MDA registration GC6440126-238777. See our Regulatory and Safety page for details.

2. Decide where laser therapy fits in your service

Laser therapy is usually one part of a broader plan, used alongside exercise therapy, manual therapy and education. Common clinical settings include:

See all clinical applications for more detail on each area.

3. Set up a safe treatment room

Class 4 lasers need clear safety controls. Before the first patient session, make sure you have:

  • A defined treatment area with laser warning signage at the entrance.

  • Protective eyewear rated for the device's wavelengths, for the operator, the patient and anyone else present.

  • Reflective surfaces such as mirrors and shiny trolleys removed or covered.

  • A procedure for controlling entry while the laser is in use.

  • A named person responsible for laser safety and for keeping training records up to date.

4. Train every operator

Every clinician who uses the laser should complete safe-use and protocol training before treating patients, with refresher training for new staff. VOLTA F3 includes installation, protocol orientation and operator training through VOLTA Academy.

5. Build a simple clinical workflow

A consistent workflow keeps sessions efficient and well documented. A protocol-first approach looks like this:

  1. Assess: the clinician assesses the patient and decides whether photobiomodulation is appropriate, checking contraindications.

  2. Select a protocol: choose from the device's built-in protocols for the area and condition.

  3. Set parameters: confirm or fine-tune output and time for each wavelength.

  4. Treat and review: deliver the session, record parameters and patient feedback, and review progress against the treatment plan.

6. Document every session

Record the protocol used, wavelengths, power, time, treatment area and patient response in the clinical notes. Good documentation supports continuity of care when more than one clinician treats the same patient, and it helps you review what is working in your practice.

7. Communicate clearly with patients

Explain what the treatment involves, what the patient will feel, why eyewear is needed and how laser therapy fits into their wider plan. Avoid promising specific outcomes. Patients who want to know where to find treatment can use our Find a Clinic page.

8. Plan for service and support

Ask how the device will be serviced, who handles repairs and how quickly support is available. VOLTA F3 is installed, maintained and serviced locally by VOLTA Laser Sdn. Bhd. in Kuala Lumpur. Purchase and rental options are available. See Support for details.

Quick checklist

  • MDA registration number confirmed for the exact model

  • Treatment room, signage and eyewear in place

  • All operators trained, with records kept

  • Workflow and documentation template agreed

  • Service and support arrangements confirmed
